What's Welsh for Performance? Beth yw 'performance' yn Gymraeg?
An Oral History of Performance Art in Wales - Hanes Llafar Celfyddyd Perfformio yng Nghymru

The Early Years of Chapter Arts Centre
Blynyddoedd Cynnar Canolfan Celfyddydau Chapter
Interviewees / Cyfweleion: Janek Alexander, Geoff Moore & Mike Pearson
What is the relationship between performance art and experimental
theatre? It has often been claimed that whilst in North America
performance art grew out of painting and sculpture, in Britain artists
aligned themselves more closely with alternative theatre and its
radical traditions. In Wales, the borders between experimental theatre
and performance art have indeed always been fluid. Here theatre
artists have often embraced artistic strategies that are familiar
from performance art, such as site-specificity, task-based physical
action, the use of duration and a greater attention to the audience.
Three of the most important Wales-based experimental theatre artists
of the last few decades, Janek Alexander, Geoff Moore and Mike Pearson,
were in conversation about their work, Cardiff's performance scene
in the 1970s and 1980s and their involvement in Chapter Arts
Centre.
Janek Alexander worked as a performer and
director with companies such as Diamond Age, before becoming
theatre programmer for Chapter. He is now the Arts Centre's
director. Geoff Moore is artistic director of Moving Being,
one of the first multimedia and interdisciplinary performance groups
in the UK. Mike Pearson was a founding member of Cardiff
Laboratory Theatre in the 1970s and Brith Gof in the
1980s and still makes performance work with Pearson/ Brookes.
Beth yw'r berthynas rhwng celfyddyd perfformio â theatr arbrofol?
Fe honnir y gellir olrhain datblygiad celfyddyd perfformio yng Ngogledd
America o feysydd arlunio a cherflunio, tra bod artistiaid tebyg
ym Mhrydain wedi gosod eu hunain yn agosach at y theatr amgen a'i
draddodiadau radicalaidd.Yn wir, mae'r ffin rhwng theatr arbrofol
a chelfyddyd perfformio yng Nghymru wedi bod yn un hyblyg. Mae artistiaid
theatr yng Nghymru yn aml wedi defnyddio strategau celfyddydol a
ellir eu holrhain o gelfyddyd perfformio, megis theatr safle-benodol,
gwaith corfforol yn seiliedig ar dasgau, perfformiadau parhaol,
ac o dalu mwy o sylw i'r gynulleidfa.
Roedd tri o artistiaid theatr arbrofol bwysicaf Cymru o'r deg mlynedd
ar hugain diwethaf, Janek Alexander, Geoff Moore ac Mike Pearson,
yn sgwrsio am eu gwaith, am y sin berfformio yng Nghaerdydd yn y
1970au ac 1980au ac ynglyn â'u cysylltiadau a Chanolfan
Gelf Chapter.
Gweithiodd Janek Alexander fel perfformiwr
a chyfarwyddwr gyda chwmnïau megis Diamond Age, cyn
iddo ddod yn rhaglennydd theatr ar gyfer Chapter. Erbyn hyn,
Janek yw cyfarwyddwr y Ganolfan. Geoff Moore yw cyfarwyddwyr
artsitig Moving Being, un o'r grwpiau perfformio aml-gyfryngol
a rhyngddisgyblaethol cyntaf yn y DU. Roedd Mike Pearson yn un o aelodau cychwynnol Cardiff Laboratory Theatre yn
yr 1970 a Brith Gof yn y 1980au, ac mae'n parhau i gynhyrchu gwaith
gyda Pearson/Brookes.
