The Avant-garde in the Classroom: reenacting–learning–performing (workshop)

In the early 1970s, whilst a former high school in Canton was turned into a space for art, across town Cardiff’s College of Art became one of the first art schools in Britain where students could follow dedicated tuition in performance. Forty years later, in collaboration with John Danvers, one of the former teachers, and with the help of documentation from the period, we will be revisiting some of the approaches to the making of performance that were being tried out in Cardiff. Among them will be Action/Ideas, a workshop led by John Gingell and colleagues, which first took place in Chapter in October 1971. At a time when art education finds itself under increasing threat, we will be asking what we may be able to learn from those that first approached learning and teaching (as) performance art

Experimentica 1.1 festival, hosted by Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, 15 October 2011.
